How many times have you said that the best thing about your holiday was the wonderful people you met? Imagine how many more people you can meet and interact with if you can speak their language.  Look at our course and see how you can make great memories by connecting with Greek people in their own language.

In most tourist areas in Europe, including Greece and Cyprus, many people who work in tourism speak English and other European languages. But being able to chat in Greek opens so many more doors, just by knowing common Greek phrases and useful Greek words.

Even with a simple good morning “καλημέρα”  (kalimera), good night “καληνύχτα” (kalinihta), good evening “καλησπέρα” (kalispera), thank you “ευχαριστώ” (efharisto) or hello “γειά σου”  (yia sou), you will be rewarded with a huge smile and a big welcome. And if you can say a few more things, like asking simple questions or ordering at a restaurant, Greek people will really want to engage with you. and they will take you to their hearts.

What’s so great about learning a new language?

Are there other good reasons to learn Greek or any other foreign language? Absolutely! You’ll meet new people on your language learning journey, both fellow learners as well as the Greek people you’ll meet.  You could find yourself with speakers of other languages when you’re in Greece or Cyprus, for example in your hotel, and the only common language between you may be Greek.

The majority of the world’s population are bilingual and many are multilingual.  If you’re starting to learn your second language, you’ll soon join all those bilingual and multilingual people. You’ll boost your brainpower and this can also stave off Alzheimer’s disease.

Bilingualism keeps you young! Bilingual people are often more creative and better at problem-solving because they can see things from more than one perspective. And once you see your progress in your language learning, you’ll boost your self-confidence. When you’ve learnt another language in addition to your native language, you’ll find that the process of learning a third or fourth language becomes a bit easier.

Learning a language like Greek also involves learning about the culture, history and way of life of the people who speak Greek. For many people, this is one of the most exciting aspects of travelling abroad and exploring new places, experiences and cultures. Travelling and learning another language develops your respect for others.  And Greek people will respect you for learning their language. It’s true to say it’s a small world and it can seem even smaller when you can connect with people in their own language.

"How to say greek words"... What will I learn?

Our course can take you from the very first steps in learning Greek to being able to have simple conversations with local people that you meet on holiday.  What kinds of things will you learn? Well, here are some travel tips. Food and drink are always important. So, you’ll certainly learn basic greek phrases like how to order in a taverna or a bar.

Greek people are always interested in people so they will probably ask you about yourself. They’re not being nosy – they are interested in you. So, they’ll want to know where you’re from if you’re married if you have children and then all about your children.

And the more Greek you can speak and understand, the more you can venture into the more remote villages off the beaten track. Don’t be surprised if Greeks respond in fast, colloquial Greek. It’s only because they’re so happy you can speak some Greek, beyond the Greek alphabet

They might also give you free drinks in the taverna or some homegrown fruit or vegetables if you’re in the countryside.  It’s easy to make friends with Greek people because they love meeting people and getting to know them over a drink.

If you’re keen on culture, Greece is full of it! In this course, you’ll learn about the Greek culture. You’ll be able to ask the way to the museum or the archaeological site. And understand the answer! Maybe you want to take a bus or a ferry to go island-hopping. You’ll learn how to ask about timetables and destinations. And in Greece, the bus and ferry services are excellent. So, do not be afraid to use them. You could end up sitting next to a local person and learn more about how people live outside of the tourist areas.

Then, of course, there’s the fabulous beach-life in Greece and Cyprus. You’ll be able to ask for your sun loungers in Greek. At many beaches, you can order your drinks and snacks from your sun lounger. Do it in Greek and maybe surprise the waiter. They’ll understand you but sometimes they might answer in English because they’re so geared up for tourists. But if you go to the same beach regularly, they’ll remember you as the tourist who can speak not only basic Greek phrases but whole sentences in Greek!
